Enrolment

The Master of Bioscience Engineering: Sustainable Urban Bioscience Engineering is jointly organised by the University of Antwerp (coordinator), Ghent University and KU Leuven. To be able to follow all the courses and have access to the necessary infrastructure (research laboratoria, student restaurants, libraries, …), you will have to enrol or register at these three universities. You will only pay a tuition fee at the coordinating university (University of Antwerp) for your main enrolment as a degree student. The enrolments as a guest student at Ghent University and KU Leuven are free of charge.

Caution: Please read the admission requirements and follow the application procedure first. You can only enrol for this Master’s programme if you either (1) have a bachelor degree in bioscience engineering (bachelor in de bio-ingenieurswetenschappen), issued by an institution recognized by the Flemish government, or (2) were granted admission from the Board of Admission for this programme.

1. Main enrolment as a degree student at the University of Antwerp

Your main enrolment is at the University of Antwerp, as the coordinating university for this Master’s programme. The enrolment starts on 1 July for the coming academic year. However, the online preregistration is available sooner.

Before you start your enrolment, please collect the necessary documents:

  • a color scan of your passport (pdf)
  • a color scan of your degree or equivalent certificate, such as a letter of acceptance from the admission application (pdf)
  • a digital photo of your face for your student card (jpg)

To enrol at the University of Antwerp as a degree student, please go to this page and complete the following steps:

  • Step 1: Complete and submit the online preregistration
  • Step 2: Sign the contract and complete the enrolment
  • Step 3: Pay your tuition fee
  • Step 4: Select your courses in your study portal SisA (see further below)

2. Registration as a guest student at Ghent University

To register at the Ghent University as a guest student for an interuniversity programme, please follow these instructions.

Important: Complete your registration as mentioned, but do not submit an enrolment application (see step 5) !!

The day after registration you will receive your UGent login for your UGent account by email. Some time later you will receive your student card by mail.

3. Registration as an interuniversity student at KU Leuven

To register at KU Leuven as a guest student for an interuniversity programme, you can use the online registration. If you upload all necessary documents (for instance: proof of enrolment at University of Antwerp), you will not have to come by.

4. Complete your curriculum

Once you registered for the three universities, every one of them will ask you to complete your curriculum on its own application. Register for the courses that you will enrol in that academic year (i.e. not immediately for the full master’s programme). A full-time academic year corresponds to 60 credits. You can check the programme here.

Since this is an interuniversity programme, coordinated by the University of Antwerp, please keep the following rules in mind:

  • For University of Antwerp: Add all of the courses of the relevant academic year in the curriculum (also the courses that are taught or coordinated by Ghent University or KU Leuven). This way, all of the followed courses can be counted for your degree.
  • For Ghent University: add the following courses (dependent of the academic year in which you will enrol in these courses)
    • Master Year 1 (mandatory):
      • CityLab 2: Urban Resources – Conceptual Framework (9 ECTS, SEM2)
      • CityLab 2: Urban Resources – Integrated Case (6 ECTS, SEM2)
    • Master Year 2 (electives, so only if applicable):
      • Technologies for Alternative Proteins (3 ECTS, SEM1)
      • Environmental Technology: Waste (3 ECTS, SEM2)
      • Sustainable Food Systems (5ECTS, SEM2)
  • For KU Leuven: add the following courses (dependent of the academic year in which you will enrol in these courses)
    • Master Year 1 (mandatory):
      • CityLab 3: Human Health & Urban Liveability – Conceptual Framework (9 ECTS, SEM2)
      • CityLab 3: Human Health & Urban Liveability – Integrated Case (6 ECTS, SEM2)
    • Master Year 2 (electives, so only if applicable):
      • Remote Sensing of Urban Systems (4 ECTS, SEM2)
      • Bioresponse Measurements and Process Control (3 ECTS, SEM1)
      • Europe’s Climate and Energy Policy: Internal and External Dimensions (4 ECTS, SEM1)
      • Urban Political Ecology (3 ECTS, SEM2)

If you wish to include a different course in your curriculum (e.g. during a semester abroad or in the ‘free choice’ part of the programme), you must submit a request to the Study Progress Committee.
